VAMA is a journey - taking you back to your roots

Founder Story

Being of Chinese descent, born and raised in India in the City of Joy – Kolkata, I have always been strongly inspired by Ayurveda, the rituals of hair oiling and holistic healing. Drawing from my experiences throughout childhood and fond memories of school near Darjeeling, surrounded by natural beauty, tea and herb plantations - hair oiling and hair care has always been a part of my self-care ritual.

After moving to Toronto, Canada for post-secondary education, joining the workforce and juggling full-time employment; Life got busy, and it was only going to get busier with marriage and motherhood in the near future. Similar to a lot of women who go through post-partum hair loss, I started to experience significant hair loss and scalp concerns after childbirth. The most alarming part of this whole experience wasn’t just about the hair fall, it was the realization of how I had lost such a major part of myself where I stopped paying attention to myself and my body.

It wasn’t until during one of my visits back home to India where my childhood friend pointed out my glaringly obvious bald spots that I had not even noticed how much my body had taken a toll in the last decade. I realized that I lost a lot more than just hair, I lost a part of myself that rooted for me.

Thus I started my quest for treating and reviving what was naturally mine. On the journey to strengthen and treat my hair and scalp concerns, it was challenging to find clean plant-based treatments not just for myself but for my family and children. With a childhood filled with rituals of hair oiling on a weekly basis, it was only natural I went back to my roots to seek the answer.

Driven by the need to bring Ayurveda inspired treatments to the West, Vama is all about focusing on wellness, with a strong focus on hair and scalp care. Vama is not only a personal journey about me going back to my roots in India, it can also be your journey. It is my hope to inspire and empower you to put yourself first so you can feel confident and happy as you venture into the world of hair and scalp care — starting with your roots.

I hope you’ll join me in loving and investing in you because I truly believe that self-care is the best way to be the best version of yourself for all those around you.

“It is my hope to inspire and empower you to put yourself first so you can feel confident and happy as you venture into the world of hair and scalp care — starting at your roots. ” — Sarah Lee, Founder, VAMA Wellness

VAMA

[VA·MA] (वामा)

From its Sanskrit origins, Vama means “Beautiful.” This is very meaningful to us as we aim to encourage people to take some time to invest in themselves to feel confident and beautiful both inside and out.

Our logo a beautiful Lotus signifies strength, resilience and rebirth. Known to grow roots in the muddy and murky waters, it rises above all obstacles to blossom and thrive.

To us, scalp care is tied to the Sahasrara or Crown Chakra (Energy) which is located at the top of the head where it sits like a crown, radiating upwards, hence its popular name. It is considered to be one of the most important Chakras and pressure points of the body which is often depicted by the 1,000-petaled lotus symbol. We believe that through proper scalp and hair care, we can help achieve a more balanced healthy lifestyle and be more in rooted in ourselves.
